In Memoriam Douglas Strong

Douglas Strong passed away on Wednesday, April 20th in Minneapolis.
Doug was a retired head piano technician at the Jacobs School of Music, where he worked for nearly 30 years. For many years he played french horn in the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra. Doug was also a life-long member of the Friends of Music.
Doug was the recipient of the Marge Counsilman Service Award in 2007. A former swimmer at Northwestern and a 1949 graduate of the University of Texas, Strong was an accomplished masters swimmer. He holds a number of state masters records, especially in the 75-79 and 80-84 year old age groups. He was ranked top 10 nationally in dozens of events, going back as far as 1971. Last summer (2010) he placed in the top 10 nationally in four long-course events in the 85-89 age category. He is survived by his wife Margaret Strong, a longtime member of IMTA.

Nominate a college student for the IMTA StAR Award before June 1, 2011

Collegiate Chapter Reception
The Indiana Music Teachers Association (IMTA) Student Achievement Recognition Award (StAR) may be presented by any college or university in Indiana to a deserving student, either undergraduate or graduate, who will graduate during the current academic year, and who plans to teach in an independent or collegiate music studio following graduation. (Students who plan to continue pursuing another degree after graduation are eligible.) The student should be selected on the basis of excellence, including academic achievement, successful teaching experience, and/or demonstrated leadership abilities. President's Message, Spring 2011

Greetings Colleagues,
Thanks go to Julianne Miranda, our new IMT Newsletter Editor, for initiating our foray into the first edition of the Indiana Music Teacher online!  You may remember that Julianne led us in the development of our website and she has done it again with our newsletter.  Not only was Julianne a president of IMTA from 2001 to 2004, but she has continued to play a large role in the technology area for IMTA and is returning as chair of Technology Development – I am excited to see what she has in store for our next conference.  Please give a big THANK YOU to Julianne for her continued support of IMTA.
The 2010 Conference was a big success at Wabash College and a warm thank you goes to Cheryl Everett and her committee members for all of their work.  In response to the previous year’s survey, two sessions were presented concurrently during each hour of the conference.  The response for this was positive and next conference will continue with this.  The 2011 Conference Session Call will go online in the next few weeks, so please submit your ideas.Continue reading→

Time to renew your dues!

It is time to think about renewing your MTNA/IMTA and local association membership for the 2011-2012 year. The national office sends renewal notices in April every year and hopefully you’ve received yours via email and/or postal mail. I encourage you to renew as soon as possible so that you’ll be sure to be in our current IMTA Directory/Membership Handbook.

Butler Students to present at MTNA National Conference

The Butler MTNA Collegiate Chapter has been invited to present a session at the 2011 MTNA national conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Their session, “Grow and Play Together: Preparing Children to Be Successful Collaborative Musicians,” will be on Monday, March 28, 11:00am. The Chapter invites all Indiana attendees at the national conference to come! The session was selected by MTNA as part of a competitive proposal process for collegiate chapters. There were submissions from eight chapters and three were selected for the upcoming conference. The Butler proposal was written by five graduate students in piano performance and pedagogy. The session will feature eight members of the collegiate chapter (five graduate, three undergraduate). Here’s a short description of their session: “Children are our future collaborative musicians! Come explore ensemble and group activities to develop collaborative performance skills in young musicians. Designed for ages 5-12, these activities include body percussion, singing and chanting, improvisation and movement.”
