Indiana Music Teachers Association (IMTA) is an affiliate of the Music Teachers National Association. We continue to support and uphold the standards of teaching to develop programs for students and teachers. Our teachers are committed to the advancement of music education and programs that cultivate professional growth.

Founded in 1877, IMTA and its twelve local associations have continued to offer conferences, pedagogical workshops, student performance and composition competitions, theory and ear training assessment, and non-competitive festivals in order to motivate teachers and students. A few of the IMTA member benefits include professional certification, teacher networking through our local associations, access to our Achievement in Music (AIM) graded repertoire list and syllabus, optional insurance and legal support through MTNA and a subscription to two superior publications; the American Music Teacher published bi-monthly and the MTNA e-Journal published quarterly.

For more than 120 years, the Indiana Music Teachers Association (IMTA) has fostered the instruction, study, and performance of music. More than 300 individuals throughout the state of Indiana join 20,000 colleagues nationwide to form a truly unique community of music professionals.

Member programs provide a multitude of opportunity for professional growth. Certification programs recognize pedagogical competence and promote the highest standards of music teaching. State conferences offer master classes, informational sessions and an opportunity to share ideas with fellow teachers. Competitions encourage high standards of performance and composition among young musicians. Our print resources include the Achievement in Music Syllabus and the Directory of Lecturers and Clinicians.

IMTA continues to support efforts to retain music as an essential element in a complete education. Through commissioning grants, we foster the creation of new music and through District and Local Association programs, we support independent music teachers and defend their traditional workplaces. We are also grateful for the support of our advertisers who appear throughout our site.
