Collegiate Member Benefit – Professional Conferences

Attending and presenting at conferences is an incredibly valuable way for the young professional to:

  • Network and connect with peers and mentors
  • Build their résumé
  • Develop themselves as a thoughtful and well-researched pedagogue
  • Explore and engage with the latest developments in pedagogy, music technology, and more

Being a member of MTNA (the national association) and IMTA (the Indiana state association affiliated with MTNA) offers you access to several important conferences:

The Indiana Music Teachers Association State Conference

The IMTA State Conference is held at a different Indiana location every fall and is an excellent, accessible opportunity for students to network with local colleagues and to present their research in a friendly and familiar environment. Registration is FREE for collegiate members.

MTNA Collegiate Events

Symposium

The MTNA Collegiate Symposium takes place annually. With a focus on collegiate members, recent graduates, collegiate chapters, and their advisors, the Symposium combines the quality of the lectures of the national conferences but in a much smaller and intimate environment.

National Conference

The MTNA National Conference, held annually in March/April, is a hugely vibrant event that stretches back to 1876, and brings together MTNA members from all across the country. With a rich performance and presentation schedule, this conference provides a wealth of opportunities to learn from and network with musical peers and mentors.

Students receive a reduced registration fee, but can also take advantage of the “Collegiate Monitor” option when registering. Collegiate monitors receive complimentary registration in exchange for volunteering as a conference monitor for at least 6 hours.

Be sure also to apply for the IMTA Stickley Travel Grant, which funds student winners to attend the MTNA National Conference!

GP3

GP3 (the Group Piano/Piano Pedagogy Forum) is a conference which takes place every 2 years, and focuses on practical aspects of piano pedagogy and group piano teaching. Collegiate members receive a discounted registration fee.

TEMPO: Teaching, Education, Music & Pedagogy - Online

Perhaps the most easily accessible conference, requiring no travel at all, TEMPO is a new, completely virtual event for music educators, students, and industry professionals.

The virtual conference provides attendees the opportunities to hear from colleagues and pedagogues in the field covering a range of topics, including teaching techniques, new research, the future of the profession, best business practices, lesser-known repertoire and much more.
